OUR science CURRICULUM

What is Science?

Science is the systematic study of the natural world through observation, experimentation, and analysis. It seeks to understand the underlying principles governing various phenomena, allowing us to explain, predict, and sometimes control aspects of our environment. The scientific method is a key aspect of science, involving the formulation of hypotheses, conducting experiments, gathering data, and drawing conclusions based on evidence. This rigorous approach helps ensure that scientific knowledge is reliable and continuously evolving, as new discoveries and technologies emerge.

Science at orion eden park

The Science curriculum at Orion Eden Park aims to ensure students leave with secure knowledge and understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We aim to inspire curiosity, foster critical thinking, and cultivate a deep understanding of scientific principles, equipping students to navigate and contribute to an increasingly complex and diverse world.

Science at KS3

Key Stage 3 introduces students to core concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics, providing them with a solid foundation in scientific principles that will be built upon in later years. In an increasingly complex world, scientific literacy is essential for informed citizenship. Understanding scientific concepts and the scientific issues, and being able to contribute meaningfully to societal debates on topics such as climate change, health, and technology is critical for our students. Science is taught in mixed ability groups at KS3 and depending on year groups students will have 4 or 5 periods of Science per week.

Science at KS4

Science is studied by all KS4 students as part of a balanced and varied curriculum. At the end of Year 10, students will choose between two distinct courses of study. Some will undertake the challenge of studying Biology, Chemistry, and Physics as separate full GCSEs, often referred to as ‘triple science.’ Others will follow the Combined Science: Trilogy pathway, which encompasses the three scientific disciplines while resulting in two GCSE qualifications. Science classes are set at KS4.

Regardless of the route chosen, our curriculum aims to build upon and deepen the scientific knowledge and understanding that students have developed in earlier key stages. Each subject discipline —biology, chemistry, and physics— will be taught through six lessons per week (2 per subject), allowing for in-depth exploration of key concepts.

Our vision is to cultivate a passion for science, empowering students with critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a robust understanding of the world around them. By providing a comprehensive and engaging science education, we prepare our students for future academic pursuits and inspire them to consider the myriad possibilities a career in science can offer.
